“It's a difficult thing to be an artist. The world, at the same time, values you and doesn't value you.
And so you can't be an artist and let the world have anything to say about it, since it hasn't made up its mind about you.
So you must be an artist for reasons that have nothing to do with the world. It is a thing that must be done entirely for the Spirit that informs. Nothing else will do. Nothing else is true.” |

What is Plein Air Landscape Oil Painting?
The painting (right) is a "plein air landscape oil painting".
This is a painting of the Monterey harbor. Plein air paintings are painted
outdoors, where the scene is, and they are finished the same day.
A painting done indoors from a photograph is not a plein air painting.
The French word "plein" is pronounced like the word "plain". It means
"open". So plein air means open air. A plein air painting is painted outside
in the open air.
A "landscape" painting is a painting of the surrounding land, the landscape.
This could be a painting of farm fields, mountains, hills, streams, beaches
or anything that you normally see outdoors.
The "oil" part of this refers to the kind of paint used to paint the
picture. An oil painting is painted with paints called oil paints, which
are a mixture of pigment (powdered colors) and linseed oil. If you mix
these two things together you get oil paint. Artist's oil paint usually
comes in tubes.
