This plein air painting won an Honorable Mention at the Carmel Art Festival 2006. It was a cloudy, foggy day along the Monterey coast on the day of the Carmel Art Festival, so I headed out the Carmel Valley Road looking for sun. About 24 miles out the sun was full and hot. I came around a corner and saw this golden field full of beautiful horses backlit in the sun. Despite being suspicious of me and my plein air easel, they stood still long enough for me to sketch them in.
