Only about 10 percent of Ephesus, an ancient seaport now silted in, has been excavated. The city was enormous and thriving. At its height it contained the library whose facade can be seen in the distance in this painting. It held 200,000 books. Legend says that Mary spent her last days in this city. By the 12th century the harbor had silted in and the city was finally abandoned.
